Communist Party of Cuba
by Teresita Truyillo

Dear Comrades,
First of all we would like to thank our host, the
Communist Party of Greece for once again providing the
venue and the excellent working conditions for this meeting
and for all its efforts in improving the communication and
exchange of information among ourselves.
The number of the parties represented today in this
meeting not only show the interest in this important
initiative, but also the recovery of communist and workers'
parties and of the left in general. It shows that communist
ideas are not dead nor the capacity for action against the
current imperialist world order.
The theme that gathers us today is of great importance.
Even imperialist forces realizing the need for alliances
and co-operation and the left needs to articulate a
co-ordinated common response to the current challenges.
We believe that alliances and co-operation at national,
regional and international levels are crucial.
In this meeting we will be able to learn from each party's
own experience and analyse how best we can work together to
struggle more effectively, and identify the areas where
common action is possible.
In Cuba we have a long tradition of national co-operation
that led us to the victory of the Cuban Revolution. The
Communist Party of Cuba is the result of the merging of the
3 organisations that allied in the armed struggle led by
the 26th of July movement.
In Latin America, since the beginning of the 90's the Sao
Paulo Forum has provided the platform for exchange and
co-operation among parties of the left. This is perhaps a
unique forum in which all the parties of the left,
regardless their specific ideology are united by
anti-imperialism.
In spite of the efforts of US imperialism to destroy the
Forum by promoting divisions or the attempts of other
regional and international organisations to attract the
regional political interest, the Forum has not only
survived, but continues to be the most representative
democratic and active experience of regional co-operation
in Latin America.
Co-operation in the anti-imperialist struggle does not take
place at the party level only. Some of the parties present
here have parliamentary representation and some like our
party are in government. Those are also important scenarios
for alliances and co-operation.
Cuba is actively participating in the struggle against the
current unipolar world orders, in many governmental forums
and organisations. At the UN, among other, we are demanding
the reform of the security Council and the democratisation
of the decision-making procedures that today are under the
absolute control of the US.
In the Non Aligned Movement and the group of 77, we are
working for the strengthening of the positions of the South
in the confrontation with imperialist forces that intend to
legitimise the right of intervention and erode the
principles of the UN Charter with the new concepts of
limited sovereignty and humanitarian intervention aimed
only at expanding their domination and influence.
NATO's new strategic concept, adopted at its 50th
Anniversary summit poses a real threat to all the countries
in the world, butprimarily, of course, to the third world
countries. This is another important area of struggle that
communists and left parties from whatever region must not
overlook.
The South summit of the G77 held in Havana last April was
also a relevant step in the co-ordination among the South.
In his speech at the summit, comrade Fidel Castro
emphasised the need to destroy the present international
monetary institution the IMF and the World Bank that impose
neo-liberal policies that only bring destabilisation and
social deprivation to the countries of the South and to
build new institutions that will really serve the national
interests of the Third World.
The international protest movements against the meetings of
the World Trade Organisations and the IMF in Seattle and
Washington are a new phenomenon that we will must follow
closely.
Dear Comrades,
Lets work together here in the best spirit of co-operation
and join our efforts in common action not only to interpret
and defy the imperialist new world order, but as many said:
to change it .

Thank you very much.
