Let's nationalize the Swiss Post before sellout managers dismantle public service entirely!
The town councilors of the Communist Party of Switzerland moved immediately to urge their respective municipalities to oppose the company's decisions.
Swiss Post does not contradict itself and a few days ago decided to close another around 20 post offices by 2028, including those in Cadro, Maglio di Colla, Mezzovico, Bellinzona-Semine, Bellinzona-San Paolo, Faido, Lodrino, Mesocco, Novazzano, Arzo, Locarno-Solduno and Verscio. In addition to the obvious problems in labor relations we are faced with a continuous dismantling of public service, of which the Post is an essential element, whose capillarity over the territory, including the most remote areas, should instead be guaranteed, also because it is synonymous of national cohesion.
It is intolerable that managers (some of them linked to the Swiss Socialdemocratic Party!) of a service that remains the property of the federal government act against the interests of the collectivity and conceive themselves as a private company responding only to the principles of maximum capitalist profit. In reality, however, there is nothing to be surprised about: these are the effects of the process of liberalization of the postal market that they insist on not wanting to stop!
The Communist Party tried vainly, again a few months ago, to persuade the Parliament of the Republic and Canton of Ticino (where there are two elected communist representatives) to approve its initiative to ask the central government restore the federal public directorship of the Swiss Post, but even the MPs who in the electoral campaign had said they were in favor eventually, voted against it and defended the trend toward privatization of the service.
Of course, we are not giving up: in Lugano our town councilor Edoardo Cappelletti has already submitted an interpellation, while in the Bellinzona Municipal Parliament we will vote in favor of a resolution against this measure, and our two town councilors Alessandro Lucchini and Massimiliano Ay have also submitted a parliamentary act with the support of the entire fraction of the Left Unity. Similarly, we have also moved in the Locarno municipal legislative with a cross-party interrogation of which our town councilor Gionata Genazzi is the first signatory.
Our parliamentary interventions in these three towns recall that before closing or relocating an access point with postal service, the Swiss Post must consult the authorities of the affected municipalities and strive to find a mutually agreed solution (Art. 14, para. 6 of the Swiss Postal Law). In the absence of a mutually agreed solution, the municipal authorities may refer the matter to the Federal Postal Commission (PostCom) within 30 days of notification of the company's decision; the final decision whether to close or relocate the post office or the postal agency in question is made following a conciliation procedure and taking into account the recommendation of the PostCom (Art. 34 of the Swiss Postal Law). The goal of a shared solution according to the law implies that Swiss Post is willing to examine any alternatives proposed by municipal authorities, provided, however, that the obligation to verify the alternatives proposed by municipal authorities presupposes that they agree to dialogue with Swiss Post and make feasible proposals.
The need to oppose this dismantling plan was, moreover, also evoked by the "Syndicom" Trade Union, which in fact called on the municipalities concerned to oppose the planned post office closures. The Communist Party of Switzerland is therefore acting within institutions to strengthen this union claim.
We also urge people to sign the online petition “For the maintenance of all Swiss Post branches!” launched by the "Syndicom" Trade Union (https://syndicom.ch/it/divisioni/servizipostaliefinanziari/petizione/), which correctly calls for maintaining the current network of 770 branches, not using the excuse of digitalization to weaken the universal service and avoiding any layoffs.
