The National Secretariat of the Communist Party of India issued today (August 11, 2024) the following statement:

CPI takes note and expresses its serious concern over the attacks minority communities are facing in Bangladesh after the liquidation of the Sheikh Hasina government. It is evident that certain fundamentalist groups are trying to further their communal and divisive agenda in the wake of students’ protest leading to the resignation of the incumbent government.

The CPI expects that the interim government will take serious against action those elements who are engaging in such activities and will undertake trust building measures to ensure harmony prevails. The Interim Government led by Prof. Muhammad Yunus should ensure the safety and security of all religious minorities, including Hindus, Christians, ethnic minorities and non-believers, according to the ethos of secular democracy. Fundamentalist forces should not prevail over the inclusive legacy of Bangladesh’s liberation struggle, where all communities fought together.

The CPI also appeals to the secular, democratic and Left forces in Bangladesh to prevent the capture of popular anger by fundamentalist forces and work for communal harmony. The CPI urges the government of India to raise this matter with the appropriate authorities to prevent any escalation in violence and to ensure that minorities remain safe in the neighbouring country.

The CPI also warns against attempts to use the situation in Bangladesh for communal polarisation in India. The GoI and all secular-democratic forces must work to thwart any such attempt to fuel communal tensions in India.
