N. Biren Singh Resignation Too Late, PM Must Visit Manipur Now: CPI
The National Secretariat of the Communist Party of India issued today (February 10, 2025) the following statement:
After nearly two years of violence and turmoil, N. Biren Singh, the Chief Minister of Manipur, has resigned, acknowledging the complete failure of the BJP's so-called "double engine" government. His resignation, which had long been demanded by opposition parties like the CPI, comes at the cost of countless lives lost and thousands displaced. The people of Manipur have lost all trust in both N. Biren Singh and the BJP.
This resignation should lead to a course correction, one that involves engaging all political parties and relevant stakeholders in Manipur to work toward lasting peace. Prime Minister Modi must now show compassion for Manipur's suffering, admit the failure of his government's handling of the situation, show the audacity to visit the state and engage to find a way towards lasting peace.
Further, N. Biren Singh's regime saw repression of democratic rights, with numerous journalists and activists, including CPI National Secretary Annie Raja, NFIW General Secretary Nisha Sidhu, Advocate Diksha Dwivedi and other leaders and workers of CPI, being harassed to suppress the truth. In addition, a leaked audio, allegedly of N. Biren Singh, raises questions about his potential involvement in the violence. The CPI demands a high-level, impartial inquiry to investigate these allegations.
