Banning the Activities of Syrian Communists is a Gross Violation of Basic Human Rights

In a predictable move that exposes the political approach of the new Syrian government, which replaced the former dictatorial regime, the new political leadership decided in its meeting on January 29 to ban the activities of Syrian communists and their parties. These parties have been active for over a hundred years, during which the communists engaged in a difficult struggle for the people's livelihood and the freedom of the homeland. They consistently took a clear stance against all forms of oppression, the confiscation of fundamental rights, and the dictatorial practices of the previous regime, working openly in politics without resorting to violence or seeking the support of regional or foreign powers.

Serious and responsible thinking about securing a better future for Syria cannot be achieved by reinforcing dictatorial patterns of governance or merely replacing one dictator with another. The peoples of the region are weary of oppression, dictatorship, and civil wars that have drained both material and human resources. The true and bright future of the new Syria lies in building a democratic and civil state by completing the process of transitional justice. This includes ending all forms of dictatorship, holding real criminals accountable for their crimes against the Syrian people, and focusing efforts on establishing a democratic environment, achieving political and party pluralism, ensuring the operation of political parties, civil society organizations, and unions, securing women's rights, recognizing the rights of the Kurdish people and all other components in Syria, and affirming diversity. All these principles must be guaranteed through a democratic and civil constitution that reflects the will of all Syrians, regardless of their ethnic or communal backgrounds.

We express our solidarity with the Syrian communists, who have stood with their people through the darkest times in the history of the Syrian state. We strongly condemn the decision of the new Syrian leadership to ban the activities of Syrian communists.
