EDITORIAL | Popular Sovereignty hijacked

Nicolás Maduro intends to reelect himself with results written on a napkin, without the slightest care for the forms and much of the mechanisms and procedures enshrined in the Constitution of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. 

Everybody knows what happened last July 28 and the disarray of the leadership of the Government and the United Socialist Party (PSUV) is such that they have set in motion a dangerous conspiracy against the will of the people. 

The legal persecution of the elections is the culminating point of a campaign that was marked by irregularities of all kinds; among them, the attack against the revolutionary and leftist organizations, which could not present their own candidacy; concentrating the dispute for the Presidency in the two hegemonic poles of the bourgeoisie ─such as the one headed by Nicolás Maduro himself and the duo formed by María Corina Machado/Edmundo González Urrutia. 

The Government-PUSV has made the Electoral Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) ─under its control─ not only arrogate to itself functions that are strictly within the competence of the CNE, but also usurp the sovereignty that resides in a non-transferable manner in the Venezuelan people. However, a sentence cannot replace votes. The ruling leadership knows this and has needed to accompany its ruse with the execution of an unprecedented wave of repression against the popular sectors. 

Temporary forced disappearances; detentions of minors, women and people with disabilities; arbitrary and humiliating searches in the streets; illegal searches of homes and theft of belongings; extortions and the actions of para-police groups in complicity with State forces; as well as the annulment of passports, have been the order of the day. 

This policy of terror has been fed with psychological and propaganda operations aimed not only at neutralizing popular protests, but also at imposing an opinion matrix in which defending popular sovereignty, the Constitution or the rule of law, is the same as being fascist. 

The hysteria of the high ranking PSUV hierarchy is undeniable. Hence, [new Interior Minister] Diosdado Cabello has threatened to prevent the participation in the next elections to those who do not recognize the unlawful ruling of the TSJ on the presidential elections. On his part, [National Assembly President] Jorge Rodriguez Gomez, in a violent speech in the National Assembly, urged those who denounce the lack of transparency in the results presented by the CNE, to form a guerrilla front and sentenced: “we will sweep them away”. 

These messages of hate and open threats of extermination against political dissidence do not seem to make a dent for the Ombudsman, who also cowardly keeps silent about the atrocities that have occurred in the slums of the country in the last few weeks. 

The acute political crisis in Venezuela has exposed the reactionary character of the PSUV-Government, which has taken a step of no return towards authoritarianism and very dangerous forms of State terrorism. It is the task of the revolutionary, popular and genuinely democratic forces to confront this coup against popular sovereignty with the construction of spaces of broad unity to strengthen the struggle for the recovery of the Constitution and the rule of law in Venezuela.

EDITORIAL | Soberanía Popular secuestrada

Nicolás Maduro pretende reelegirse con unos resultados escritos en una servilleta, sin el más mínimo cuidado de las formas y mucho de los mecanismos y procedimientos consagrados en la Constitución de la República Bolivariana de Venezuela. 

Todo el mundo sabe qué ocurrió el pasado 28 de julio y el descalabro de la cúpula del Gobierno y del Partido Socialista Unido (PSUV) es tal, que han puesto en marcha una peligrosa conspiración contra la voluntad popular.

La judicialización de las elecciones es el punto culminante de una campaña que estuvo marcada por irregularidades de todo tipo; entre ellas el zarpazo contra las organizaciones revolucionarias y de izquierda, que no pudieron presentarse con una candidatura propia; concentrándose la disputa por la Presidencia en los dos polos hegemónicos de la burguesía ─como lo son el encabezado por el propio Nicolás Maduro y la dupla conformada María Corina Machado/Edmundo González Urrutia. 

El Gobierno-PUSV ha hecho que la Sala Electoral del Tribunal Supremo de Justicia ─bajo su control─ no solo se arrogue funciones que estrictamente son competencia del CNE, sino que también usurpe la soberanía que reside de manera intransferible en el pueblo venezolano. Sin embargo, una sentencia no puede reemplazar los votos. La cúpula gobernante lo sabe y ha necesitado acompañar su ardid con la ejecución de una inédita ola de represión contra los sectores populares. 

Desapariciones forzadas temporales; detenciones de menores de edad, mujeres y personas con discapacidad; requisas arbitrarias y humillantes en las calles; allanamientos ilegales a viviendas y robo de pertenencias; extorsiones y la actuación de grupos parapoliciales en complicidad con fuerzas del Estado; así como la anulación de pasaportes, han estado a la orden del día. 

Esta política de terror ha sido alimentada con operaciones psicológicas y de propaganda que tienen como objetivo no solamente neutralizar las protestas populares, sino imponer una matriz de opinión en la que defender la soberanía popular, la Constitución o el estado de derecho, es lo mismo que ser fascista. 

La histeria de los altos jerarcas del PSUV es inocultable. De allí que Diosdado Cabello haya amenazado con impedir la participación en los próximos comicios electorales a quienes no reconozcan el fallo írrito del TSJ sobre las elecciones presidenciales. Por su parte, Jorge Rodríguez Gómez, en un violento discurso en la Asamblea Nacional, instó a aquellos que denuncian la falta de transparencia en los resultados presentados por el CNE, a formar un frente guerrillero y sentenció: «los barreremos». 

Estos mensajes de odio y amenazas abiertas de exterminio contra la disidencia política parecen no hacer mella en el Defensor del Pueblo, que también calla cobardemente sobre las atrocidades que han ocurrido en las barriadas del país en las ultimas semanas. 

La aguda crisis política en Venezuela ha dejado al descubierto el carácter reaccionario del Gobierno-PSUV, que ha dado un paso de no retorno hacia el autoritarismo y formas muy peligrosas de terrorismo de Estado. Es tarea de las fuerzas revolucionarias, populares y genuinamente democráticas hacer frente a este golpe contra la soberanía popular con la construcción de espacios de amplia unidad para fortalecer la lucha por la recuperación de la Constitución y el estado de derecho en Venezuela.
