The PCTE on the First Anniversary of the War in Palestine

and the Regional Escalation of the Conflict

A year has already elapsed since the beginning of the new stage of Israeli aggression to the Palestinian people. Official data from early October show more than 41,500 dead Palestinians and 96,000 wounded. The PCTE upholds its defense of the Palestinian cause as a legitimate national liberation struggle, on which it considers it is necessary to extend the solidarity of the peoples.

The intention to declare October 7 as the beginning of this war still remains, systematically forgetting that the Palestinian people has been suffering for more than half a century the colonization and extermination by the State of Israel. The Government of such country unleashed a ground offensive, thus starting a bloodbath with few historical precedents. The limits for human cruelty have been blurred. Not only civilian structures, but also schools, orphanages, and hospitals have been attacked and bombed in several occasions.

The tensions in the region have been increasing in the last year. This same October started the ground invasion of Lebanon by Israel and the subsequent missile attack by Iran on the latter. This has just fulfilled predictions and reaffirmed the course of war escalation in the Middle East, which can be much worse in case of a more direct clash between Israel and Iran.

Just like we denounced when these developments started, it is confirmed in the current situation that this is not a war of Israel against Hamas nor Hezbollah, much less against “terrorism” — it is a war whose victims are the Middle Eastern peoples.

Throughout this year, we have witnessed slight changes of position of the Spanish Government and part of the international community on the conflict and Israel's actions. This matter is mainly explained by the pressure made by the popular mobilizations in different parts of the world. Nevertheless, the key lines for the position and action of the Governments —including the Spanish one— remain intact. This is why we want to denounce one more time the hypocrisy of the social democratic Government in Spain, whose ambiguity enables both a half-hearted recognition of the Palestinian State or the appeals to “restraint” and at the same time continue the strong trade and diplomatic relations with the State of Israel as well as its commitments to the United States, the EU, and NATO. The use of our soil for arms trade missions for Israel and the purchase of arms from this country, allowed by the Spanish Government, has neither stopped — the operations concluded since October 7, 2023 are worth more than 1 billion of Euros.

The PCTE calls on the working class and popular strata to keep on the mobilizations in solidarity with the Palestinian cause and against the different ways the Spanish industrial and military facilities as well as institutions are serving or supporting the Israeli occupation and its military plans. On the other side, against the steps taken towards the generalization of a regional war with international outcomes, it is necessary to start structuring an organizational network opposed to war escalation. It is time to start showing the solidarity with the Palestinian people and the other peoples attacked in the regions with deeds, apart from words. Deeds like demanding, among other things, the cessation of the Spanish-Israel arms trading, the return of the more than 600 Spanish soldiers in Lebanon, the liberation of Palestinian prisoners, the end of the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territory, and the end of the Israeli air and ground attacks against the other Middle Eastern peoples.

El PCTE ante el primer aniversario de la guerra en Palestina y la escalada regional del conflicto

Ha pasado ya un año desde el inicio de la nueva fase de la agresión israelí al pueblo palestino. Los datos oficiales de principios de este mes de octubre arrojan más de 41.500 palestinas y palestinos asesinados y de 96.000 heridos. El PCTE mantiene su defensa de la causa palestina como una legítima y justa lucha de liberación nacional, ante la que considera que sigue siendo necesario extender la solidaridad internacionalista.

A día de hoy, desde los altavoces de la burguesía de nuestro país y sus aliados, persiste la intención de declarar el 7 de octubre como el inicio de esta guerra, olvidándose sistemáticamente de que el pueblo palestino lleva más de medio siglo sufriendo la colonización y el exterminio por parte del Estado de Israel. El gobierno sionista desencadenó la ofensiva terrestre dando comienzo a un baño de sangre con pocos precedentes históricos, atacando y bombardeado no solo asentamientos civiles, sino escuelas, orfanatos y hospitales en reiteradas ocasiones.

Las tensiones en la zona han ido incrementándose a lo largo del último año, comenzando este mes de octubre la invasión terrestre del Líbano por parte de Israel, y el posterior ataque con misiles de Irán a este último. Se cumplen con ello los pronósticos de la escalada de la guerra en Oriente Medio, que puede alcanzar niveles mucho mayores en caso de una confrontación más directa entre Israel e Irán. Como ya denunciábamos al inicio de estos acontecimientos, en la coyuntura actual se confirma que no es una guerra de Israel contra Hamás o contra Hezbolá, ni mucho menos contra el “terrorismo”, sino una guerra imperialista donde las víctimas son los pueblos de Oriente Medio.

La presión ejercida por las movilizaciones populares ocurridas en distintas partes del mundo ha obligado a muchos gobiernos, como por ejemplo el español, a condenar de palabra algunas de las actuaciones del Estado sionista. Sin embargo, las líneas fundamentales de posicionamiento y acción se mantienen intactas. Por ello queremos denunciar una vez más la hipocresía del gobierno socialdemócrata de España, cuya ambigüedad permite reconocer con la boca pequeña el Estado Palestino, o hacer intervenciones llamando a la “contención”, y al mismo tiempo seguir manteniendo fuertes relaciones comerciales y diplomáticas con el Estado de Israel, así como sus compromisos con los Estados Unidos, la UE y la OTAN. No ha cesado tampoco el uso de nuestro suelo para misiones comerciales armamentísticas con destino a Israel y la compra de armas a este, habiéndose concertado operaciones por valor de más de 1.000 millones de euros desde el 7 de octubre de 2023.

El PCTE llama a la clase obrera y los sectores populares a seguir con las movilizaciones en solidaridad con la causa Palestina, oponiéndose a las distintas formas en que las infraestructuras industriales y militares y las instituciones españolas sirven o apoyan a la ocupación israelí y a sus planes militares.

Por otro lado, ante los pasos dados hacia la extensión de la guerra regional, que tendría profundas implicaciones internacionales, consideramos parte del deber internacionalista comenzar a articular un tejido organizativo de oposición a la escalada bélica. Es hora de comenzar a demostrar la solidaridad con el pueblo palestino y los pueblos atacados de la región con hechos además de con palabras, oponiendo acciones para forzar y exigir, entre otras cosas, la suspensión de la compraventa de armas de España con Israel y el regreso de los más de 600 militares españoles en el Líbano, uniéndose a las reivindicaciones por la liberación de todos los presos palestinos, el cese de la ocupación israelí del territorio de Palestina, y el fin de los ataques por aire y tierra de Israel al resto de pueblos de Oriente Medio.
