STATEMENT BY THE SOCIALIST WORKERS' PARTY OF CROATIA ON THE RE-INTRODUCE CUBA TO THE LIST OF STATE SPONSORS OF TERRORISM
The Socialist Workers' Party of Croatia (SRP) strongly condemns the decision of the United States of America to re-introduce Cuba to the list of state sponsors of terrorism, as well as the continuation of the inhumane economic, trade and financial blockade of Cuba. This decision, made by the Donald Trump administration at the very beginning of its mandate, represents an unjust and politically motivated measure directed against the sovereignty of the Cuban people and their right to independent development.
The US decision is not based on real facts or evidence of Cuba's involvement in terrorist activities. On the contrary, Cuba has been known for many years as a promoter of international cooperation, health assistance and the fight for social justice, especially through the sending of medical teams to numerous crisis-stricken countries around the world.
The blockade of Cuba, which has lasted for more than six decades, is one of the longest-lasting and most inhumane examples of collective punishment of a country in modern history. It not only causes enormous economic damage, estimated at hundreds of billions of dollars, but also directly threatens the lives and well-being of the Cuban people. In addition to making access to basic necessities difficult, the embargo prevents Cuba from obtaining medicines, medical equipment and technologies that are critical to combating disease.
SRP points out that this move by the USA is another act of imperialist aggression based on double standards and violation of international law. We remind you that previous administrations, such as that of Barack Obama, began to take steps towards the normalization of relations with Cuba, including the removal of Cuba from the list of sponsors of terrorism. The Trump administration's decision represents a step back and an attempt to destabilize Cuba for the purpose of political pressure.
The recent decision of the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) from November 2023 speaks in support of this condemnation, when 187 countries voted for a resolution demanding an immediate end to the economic, trade and financial blockade of Cuba. Only two countries – the United States of America and Israel – voted against the resolution. This voting result clearly shows that the international community recognizes the blockade as an illegitimate and inhumane practice that violates the basic rights of the Cuban people.
The Socialist Workers' Party of Croatia expresses solidarity with the people of Cuba and their revolution and calls on the international community, including the institutions of the United Nations, to condemn these unjust measures. We also call on the government of the Republic of Croatia and the institutions of the European Union to clearly express their disagreement with this policy and to take an active stance against the economic blockade of Cuba.
We are convinced that the Cuban people, guided by the principles of solidarity, justice and sovereignty, will succeed in overcoming these challenges, as they have done in the past. SRP remains with Cuba in the fight against imperialist aggression and for a just world free from hegemony and blackmail.
