SACP message of condolences to the family of Comrade Lungi Mnganga-Gcabashe
Saturday,24 May 2025: The South African Communist Party (SACP) conveys its heartfelt condolences to the family of the African National Congress Women's League (ANCWL) Deputy President, Comrade Lungi Mnganga-Gcabashe. The SACP also conveys its condolences to the ANC Women's League, the ANC, as well as the entire liberation movement, which she served throughout her life.
Comrade Lungi was born in KwaMashu, in KwaZulu-Natal province, on 27 October 1960. It is in this community that she sharpened her political consciousness, joining in the people's struggle for a free democratic South Africa envisioned in the Freedom Charter. Comrade Lungi, as she was affectionately known, dedicated her life to serving the people of our country, particularly the working class and poor, of which women continue to carry the brunt of capitalist exploitation. She fought hard as an activist against the racist apartheid system, particularly against the apartheid regime's sponsored violence as it occurred in KwaZulu-Natal. In pursuit of a non-racial, democratic society, she was an activist of the United Democratic Front (UDF) based in Kwa-Zulu Natal (KZN). She was involved in community development and upliftment programmes in and around KZN, mainly focusing on women. Her resilience inspired the masses of our country, and the ANC Women's League showed confidence in her leadership by electing her as Deputy President.
Comrade Lungi was a member of the Republic of South Africa Parliament at the time of her passing. She first served in parliament from 2014 - 2019, and again from 2024 until her departure.
In paying tribute to Comrade Lungi Mnganga-Gcabashe, the SACP will continue its work to strengthen working-class unity, paying particular focus on the struggles faced by women in rural areas and townships. The SACP calls upon the masses of our country to unite against patriarchy and also calls upon our government to develop measures meant for the empowerment of women and to strengthen those that have been put in place.
HAMBA KAHLE MKHONTO!
