SACP message of solidarity with people of Turkey and Syria following devastating earthquake

The South African Communist Party (SACP) conveys its message of solidarity with the people of Turkey and Syria following the devastating earthquake which has already claimed the lives of over 7,200 people, with thousands more injured and negatively affected by the disaster. The SACP also sends its message of heartfelt condolences to all those who perished and wishes speedy recovery for those injured.

The SACP, further, welcomes the selfless rescue and aid efforts that have come from across the world, including the efforts of rescue and health workers from both affected countries. With the two countries facing terrible cold weather conditions, many people are still trapped under the rubble, exposed to the elements. More solidarity is urgently necessary to ensure that all those who remain buried under the rubble are rescued and urgently receive medical care.

It is important that any form of assistance from other countries and international organisations must be focused on helping the people, the majority of whom are working-class and poor, without any conditionalities and attempts at usurping their national independence and capturing their domestic policy spaces. The people of Syria and Turkey must not be forced to give up their right to self-determination in exchange for the much-needed aid. This is a ploy often used by imperialist forces against other nations, especially when they are facing difficult situations. The SACP will oppose any such move whenever and wherever it rears its ugly head.

The SACP calls upon the working-class across the world to continue to support the people of Syria and Turkey. Progressive forces in South Africa must also band together and send practical solidarity to the affected people, particularly the working-class and poor who need it the most.
