SACP unequivocally condemns Donald Trump’s irrational reinstatement of Cuba on the United States’ fraudulent “state sponsors of terrorism” list

Wednesday, 22 January 2025: The South African Communist Party (SACP) condemns with the utmost contempt it deserves the newly inaugurated US president Donald Trump’s reinstatement of Cuba into its list of so-called “state sponsors of terrorism”. The reinstatement of Cuba into this fraudulent list reinforces the close to seven-decade-long blockade imposed by the United States government on the Cuban people, a stance that has been repeatedly condemned by the United Nations as a violation of international law and calling upon the US government to remove the blockade.

The irrational executive order signed by Trump moments after his inauguration underscores the unilateral arrogance of the United States’ imperialist regime. The list, compiled without international recognition or any credible evidence, exemplifies this overreach. When it comes to evidence, Trump’s executive order blatantly exposes the baseless inclusion of Cuba, standing in stark contradiction to the truth.

Equally indefensible, Joe Biden’s administration strengthened imperialist aggression against Cuba on various fronts, including perpetuating the same irrational stance, contradicting his campaign commitment. Biden only removed Cuba from the list mere days before his term ended. The government and people of Cuba have stood firm against the United States-led imperialist aggression for over a century. We, the SACP, reaffirm our unwavering solidarity with the people and government of Cuba: the struggle against the US-led imperialist aggression continues.

Contrary to the imperialist United States regime’s narrative, it is a historical fact that it is the United States government itself that has carried out or sponsored acts of terrorism against the people of Cuba, in violation of international law with impunity. Cuba has been a victim of various acts of terrorism, which were overtly or covertly supported by the United States, on the one hand, all while Cuba, on the other, has been one of the leading nations in the genuine fight against terrorism.

Through its economic warfare against the Cuban people, the United States has caused hardships for the Cuban nation, particularly economically, including by blocking access to crucial supplies.

The SACP salutes the brave people and government of Cuba who, with the active support of the overwhelming majority of the people across the globe, continue to be resilient and have stabilised their country’s people-based system. Cuba’s fight is a fight for all of humanity against imperialist domination, exploitation and foreign occupation.

The SACP will continue to support the total lifting of the illegal blockade and calls for the United States to end its occupation of Cuba’s Guantanamo Bay with immediate effect and unconditionally.
